Tiny
yet gorgeous, Sikkim is an unquestionable wonderland located in the
foothills of eastern Himalayas which is equally famous for its lovely
views, exotic orchids as well as its lush vegetations. The famous
Himalayan peak Kanchenjunga which is the third highest peak of the world
overlooks the entire spread of the state of Sikkim. The peak is considered

Tourist Attractions
Temi Tea Garden
It is the only tea estate in the state of Sikkim which produces some of
the top quality tea that matches the best standards of the international
tea market. The Temi Tea Garden sprawls over a gentle Tendong hill slope
which produces a spectacular view for the visitors. The tea processing
factory is very much accessible if you are interested in knowing more
about the process of making tea. A visit to the tea garden is very much an
enriching experience as it gives you the exhilaration of beautiful nature
combined with a night that is well spent in an old bungalow built in the
British period.
Tsomgo Lake
It
is a holy lake and is worshiped by the local people. It is approximately
20 km away from the famous Nathula Pass. The water of the lake is cool and
the surroundings picturesque just as you expected. The lakeside has a
temple of Lord Shiva. The source of water of the Tsogmo Lake is the
mountain snow and the lake itself in turn is the origin of river Lungtze
Chu though the lake gets frozen in the winters. The lake is located in the
restricted area and therefore visitors to the place require an inner line
to visit the lake.
Khecheopalri Lake
This lake is renowned for being a wishing lake and is considered as a
sacred lake both by the Hindus as well as Buddhists. Therefore the water
sports activities are not allowed here.
Jawaharlal Nehru Botanical Garden
This Botanical Garden is maintained by the forest department of Sikkim
Government and is located close to the Rumtek Monastery. Here you'll be
able to see several botanical species, a veritable treat for the plant
lovers.
Rumtek Monastery
The Rumtek Monastery is located close to Gangtok and you reach here by
driving through the beautiful countryside. It is the seat of Kagyu order
which is one of the 4 major Tibetan Buddhist sects. The building has a
traditional design and has been deliberately built in a way to replicate
the Kagyu Headquarters in Tibet.
Climate
Most of the populated area of Sikkim has a temperate climate where
temperatures are enjoyable with temperatures going to up to 4 centigrade
in January - February whereas sunshine is abundant in between March and
May. In the heights above 6000 meters, snowfall is a common sight in
winters. The monsoon season takes place between June and September when
heavy rainfall takes place in the state which also causes landslides.
Though the seasons have been classified here, the fact is that barring
winters, the rains continue almost throughout the year and sometimes even
the winters can be irritatingly wet.
Culture
Though the culture and rituals of people of Sikkim may be diverse, they
all share common characteristics like they are warm, simple and friendly.
The people who inhabit the state of Sikkim are the Lepchas, Bhutias and
the Nepalese. Since the people here live in complete harmony, therefore
the place has come out with a composite culture which gives a common
appearance to the entire state.
How to Reach
By Air
Bagdogra is the nearest airport from Gangtok which is 124 km away. You
can book your ticket from Gangtok also for the regular flights that
operate between Bagdogra and Guwahati, Kolkata and Delhi.
By Rail
New Jalpaiguri and Siliguri are the nearest railway stations from Gangtok
which are 125 km and 144 km away respectively.
By Road
Gangtok is well connected with other major cities by road such as
Darjeeling, Kalimpong and Siliguri. You can hire cars, jeeps and luxury
coaches for the purpose or choose to travel on the regular bus service
that is operated by Sikkim Nationalized Transport.
