Lord Buddha was born as a prince in the Shakya royal family, but he left it all at the age of 29 when he decided to seek enlightenment. He attained enlightenment under a peepal tree in Bodhgaya after which he travelled widely to spread his message of Buddhism among the
people. The places he went to became pilgrimages later on as the people follow in his footsteps to find out more about Buddhism.
