Though
biking is the best way to cover large distances in the mountain regions,
the tougher terrain may restrict the bikers. Trekking makes it possible to
reach the pristine mountains and to access places unapproachable by other
means. While there are all kinds of trekking challenges available ranging
from the easy ones to the very difficult and arduous treks, an expedition
should be carefully planned according to one's ability and skills. Proper
trekking equipment and a local guide should be hired to make the trip an
enjoyable and fruitful one. The best trekking season in India is from
April to November. Eight of the ten highest mountain peaks in the world
are situated in Nepal, truly making it a trekker's paradise. Other
trekking destinations in India include Ladakh, Zanskar, Garhwal and
Kumaon, Kashmir valley, Amarnath, Kailash Mansarover, Himachal, Darjeeling
and Sikkim.
In the earlier days, Ladakh used to be out of bound for the normal
tourists therefore when it was opened to the normal tourism there was a
buzz among the Ladakh enthusiasts as the land had an exotic aura about it.
That aura continues till this day. Nowadays areas like Suru and Zanskar
valley are getting increasingly popular among the trekkers. Treks to the
areas in Garhwal and Kumaon specially the one to the source of Ganga is
also highly popular among the trekkers.
